Phishing – or the fraudulent distribution of emails/SMSs/WhatsApp’s from what appears to be a reputable source – is on the rise. Through SMSs, messaging apps or by telephone, fraudsters use phishing scams to persuade you they are from a credible organisation, for example your bank or investment platform.
They will ask you to reveal confidential information, such as your PIN, username and password or to complete a task (such as accepting an OTP authentication).
How to avoid phishing?
- Never click on a link or attachment in an SMS or email that takes you to a webpage that requests you to log in using your PIN, username, password or card information.
- If you get a telephone call, even if someone claims to be from your bank, don’t give them your PIN, login information or card numbers (such as your three-digit CVV number).
- Don’t use links in an email even if it’s more convenient – rather type the web address in your browser.
- Consider using a password manager, like LastPass, to help you manage your login information.
- Always check that the messages you receive are sent from a trustworthy source.
- Use formal communication channels. For example, contact details you know to be true and have worked before, or contact details from the legitimate website of your financial institution.
